- Dief's first alma mater: This old Greenwood school is where former prime minister John Diefenbaker took his first classes, under the tutellage of his father. Years later, the Chief returned to Greenwood as Prime Minister. Bill Brown, now 84, remembers the day. Diefenbaker asked Brown an old schoolmate, if two trees he planted behind the school ever grew. They had, and they stood tall and green. Diefenbaker, accompanied only by Brown, walked around the school to the trees and did what he said his little dog should do to all polls. The polls had predicted that Diefenbaker's Conservatives couldn't defeat the Liberal government of of Louis St. Laurent.
