Original Toronto Star caption: Getting ready for rescues. Patrol officer Brian Kennedy with the Toronto Harbor Police uses long winter hours to give finishing touches to one of 300 life rings used along the waterfront from the Humber River to Victoria Park. Winter work also includes sanding; repainting and repairing broken ribs on 40 life boats used by police in rescue operations.

Harbor police scuba divers plunge into the ice-covered water of the harbor; led by 2nd Officer Ernie Norrey (top). Following him are Brian Kennedy; David Bryan and Ulrich Ertle. In the water; only the tops of their heads show (bottom) as they practise holding their breath to conserve air and keep in shape in case a car plunges into the lake. They practise all year; even in 30-degree weather like today.
