NotesDedication signed: R.J. Illustrated with four plates each bearing two hand-coloured engravings. Two orphans, Master Tommy and Miss Maria Graceful, are sent to their destruction in Barbados by an unscrupulous, greedy guardian. A shipboard companion, Senex, rescues them from a succession of vicissitudes, such as shipwreck, wild beasts, and slavery. When safely landed at Dover, Senex reveals himself as their guardian angel with "pluming wings ... tipped with gold". Written by Richard Johnson in 1786, and advertised as "just published" in that year: Weedon, M.J.P. Richard Johnson, no. 60; and Roscoe, S. Newbery, no. J228.
