NotesThis letter accompanied a report made by the Joint Committee of Physics and Meteorology of the Society (Royal Society of London) to the Council on the subject of an extended system of magnetic observation. In 1833 the British Association for the Advancement of Science commissioned a series of magnetic measurements across the United Kingdom under the direction of Major Edward Sabine of the Royal Artillery. Within a few years, proposals were put forth to extend the program and have observatories in various locations around the world, including Montreal (as mentioned in this letter). This location, St. Helen's island off of Montreal, proved to be unsuitable and the decision was made to build the observatory in Toronto. |
