The Mississauga resident has spent $10;000 and thousands of hours in the last two years transforming a Volkswagen Beetle he paid $800 for into a collectors' item. A growing number of Metro area VW enthusiasts are saving Bugs from the wrecker's jaws and turning them into show winners.

      Uncle Frank Dawson tends to one of his injured wildfowl at his 3 3/4-acre conservation area on Elmcrest Rd. The 83-year-old bachelor has been patching up injured birds for as long as anyone can remember. With a small creek running through the back, his property has become a haven for hundreds of waterfowl. He has lived in the same house for over 50 years and has raised a varietyof birds. But Dawson can't recall when people started to bring birds to him, he said.
