Original Toronto Star caption: Maiden flight of the Dash 7. Soaring over a test area near Markham, 50-passenger STOL (for short take-off and landing) Dash 7 make its first flight Thursday. The aircraft, manufactured by de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd., can take off and land on a 2,000-foot-long runway, whereas a conventional jetliner requires a runway of up to 10,000 feet long.

      His weapon's the Dash-8: Air Atonabee president Joe Csumrik of Peterborough is staking $30 million on the 2-engined, 36-passenger de Havilland Dash 8, to gain the lion's share of the Toronto Ottawa-Montreal business passenger trade. John Gilmore of Montreal is betting $35 million on the Dash 7. It'll be no contest, says Csumrik, above, in the cockpit of his firm's plane.
