Original Toronto Star caption: Ringing in a brand new year. Whistles; party hats and balloons helped these New Year's Eve revellers at the Duke of Gloucester pub on Yonge St. welcome in 1986. While they partied in the indoor warmth; thousands poured into Nathan Phillips Square last night to hear Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins and other bands boogie away any stray blues that night have been left in the night.

He estimates he'll sell about 50,000 balloons and about 30,000 party hats, horns, noise-makers, bells and whistles to bring in the New Year. After 11 years in the business, he says he still has a lot of fun. Bischof also rents out canisters of helium gas to fill balloons, and he and staff also decorate some hotels for the festivities.

      Twice the fun: Ken Christofi, owner of Toronto's Bauhaus night club and seen here with niece Tanna, 3, had his 1974. Beetle painted VW Bug blue (it was white), the same colour as the VW his father had when Christofi was a boy in Cyprus. His New Beetle, a turbodiesel model, is white. Chriscofi admits he loves the bells and whistles and comfort of the '90s remake.
