NotesOriginal Toronto Star caption: Blazing tires spew toxic smoke. A natural resources ministry aircraft dumps water mixed with fire retardant chemicals on the three-day-old fire at a tire storage dump near Hagersville; southwest of Hamilton; yesterday. More than 1;200 people have been evacuated because of dangerous chemicals given off by the 15 million burning tires. High winds were blowing the toxins up to 4 kilometres from the fire. Officials believe the aerial water-bombing had some effect on the intense head and fire; but don t know when it can be brought under control.
