Hints on the subject of the timber duties, suggested by the Report of the honourable the Select committee of the House of commons, appointed to consider of the means of improving and maintaining the foreign trade of the country, with doubts of the soundness of the policy which dictates a system of taxation whereby an unnecessary mercantile marine is supported at the expense of the community, the importation of the manufactured article in preference to the raw material is encouraged, and the consumer is forced to supply himself with inferior goods from the most distant markets. The author supports the Baltic market for timber against that of the Canadian.
