A skin diver, he also helped make a film called Free Dive about the efforts of severely handicapped young people.

Mike Byrd, 34, is deputy superintendent at Vanier Centre. The centre, which was opened in 1969, to replace the old Mercer Reformatory in Toronto, is a therapeutic community, Byrd explains. The residents, 75 per cent of whom are under 25 years of age, live in cottage-style buldings, where each spends leisure time in her own room.
