Original Toronto Star caption: Through this mysterious-looking apparatus, Canada is playing a leading role in the search for practical uses of Atomic energy. This National Research Council photo shows the Atomic furnace -- or pile -- the circular piece in the background that resembles a ship's funnel. It has ''the highest flux of thermal neutrons ever recorded, says N.R.C. This makes it possible to study the fundamentals of atomic energy and the behavior of materials under intense bombardment by neutrons. The mass of equipment in the foreground is used in various kinds of experiments. Concentrated beams of neutrons, emerging from openings in the face of the reactor, are guided into these assemblies. These are aligned like spokes on a wheel of which the reactor forms the hub.Among the equipment in the foreground is a neutron spectrometer, used to determine the structure of certain chemical compounds; apparatus to produce isotopes for use in biological, agricultural, medical and industrial fields; and a special type of electron-pair spectrometers which makes it possible to study energy levels within the very core of the atoms.
