Original Toronto Star caption: Two figures seated in Canada's Senate mark a historic moment in the Hansard record of Canada's government. For they are the King and Queen; not only of Great Britain; but of the dominions beyond the seas-and in this particular instance they became the King and Queen of Canada in a very personal sense. For the first time in history royal assent to Canadian government measures was given in person by his majesty. The King and Queen sat quite at ease on their twin thrones; chatting quietly during the wait for the Lower House; while guests trained opera glasses on the royal couple.
