      Mike Byrd, 34, is deputy superintendent at Vanier Centre. The centre, which was opened in 1969, to replace the old Mercer Reformatory in Toronto, is a therapeutic community, Byrd explains. The residents, 75 per cent of whom are under 25 years of age, live in cottage-style buldings, where each spends leisure time in her own room.
