The 46-year-old cattle rancher is a Jehovah's Witness who travelled from Medicine Hat, Alberta, because Bateman's hip reconstruction methods involve minimal blood loss. Jehovah's Witness beliefs rule out blood transfusions for him.

Tile is one of North America's leading authorities on hip-socket surgery, performed at only a few hospitals in North America.
