NotesOriginal Toronto Star caption: Braced with cables; the Mount Washington observatory's original building survived the fiercest blast ever recorded in world observatory history. The wind blew at the phenomenal rate of 231 miles per hour; but hurricane speed of 100 miles per hour is a commonplace on this 6;288-foot New Hampshire peak. Such gales take place one day in ten. This windswept summit attracts many visitors for it is comfortably reached by the cog railway; the trestle of which is visible at the right.
