Original Toronto Star caption: The Island of santorini is one of the most spectacular in the Greek chain and one of the most terrifying for anyone with a fear of heights; for to get to the village of Thera from the waterfront you have to climb or ride a donkey 600 steps up a steep cliff. The cliff is one reminder of a cataclysmic volcanic eruption which tore the island spart about 1500 B.C.; a blast which is estimated to have been three times as great as the explosion which decimated Krakatoa in 1883.
