Original Toronto Star caption: The campaign Chief Metro Coroner Dr. Morton Shulman launched last August to improve safety features of the Don Valley Parkway and other expressway is paying off. A few months ago Metro roads department started installing more guard rails on the median strip of the parkway. Yesterday crews began changing the guard rails at bridge abutments. Formerly they were parallel to the abutment. Now they curve so cars can't get behind them; says Metro Roads Commissioner George Grant. They bounce off.

      It has to be widened, says Metro traffic commissioner Sam Cass of the Don Valley Parkway as he stands on footbridge crossing it at Riverdale Zoo. Planners estimate it will cost $15 million to widen parkway an extra two lanes, and it's not the right solution adds Cass. In addition, two other street widening programs will cost another $9 million. Cass blames halting of the Spadina Expressway.
