Original Toronto Star caption: You could have sold tickets at scalper's rates late yesterday for a meeting held on the floor of Toronto stock Exchange. The subject was the federal White Paper on tax reform; something which could have almost revolutionary effect upon stocks and investment generally. In attendance were four professors from York Unversity; John Kimber; moderator and presdient of the exchange; and about 400 concerned investment men.

    W. H. Thornburn, chairman of the Toronto Stock Exchange board of governors, sees a small revival of confidence by Canadian investors, but much less than I had expected by this time. He forecasts continued sluggishness in trading until corporate earnings improve. Thornburn thinks there could be new speculation in oil and gas stocks when results of winter drilling become available. Cost-cutting and other controls have prepared brokers for any new storms, he says.

    Last summer, he sold encyclopedias. This summer, university student Mark Dingman is selling himself - as the first prize in an unusual raffle. Dingman 21, of Toronto, has decided to raffle himself - or more precisely, 16 hours of his time - to make money for school. I wanted to run my own business. This took minimum capitalization and had minimal risk, should it fail, said Dingman, a McGill University student. And it seems like a good skill to learn, to sell yourself. Dingman is going door-to-door with his Student Slaves raffle and a very professional pitch. Tickets go for $1.99 each (or three for $5) and there are 200 in each draw. The first raffle is scheduled for Tuesday and the winner gets Dingman for 16 hours to do anything from cleaning ovens to fixing eavestroughs.
