Original Toronto Star caption: Avalanche of clay overwhelms workers on Welland Canal. Two workmen were killed and six others injured when the bank of an excavation on section 4 of the Welland canal near Thorold caved in on Saturday. Picture No.1 shows the scene of the collapse, with a steam shovel at work clearing the debris; No. 2, a rescue party work in the excavation. No.3 is Joseph Dumoulin, one of the two men killed. Nos. 4, 5 and 6 are, respectively, Aldio Gallaza, Rocco Geralamo and Mike Raccici, who were injured. No.7 is Carl Helzig, who narrowly escaped death or injury.
